Honor 8: 8 Secrets Of The Epic Glass

Honor 8 looks like a dream! Hats off to the world-class glass design. But did you know what makes it epic? ONLY we have the trade secrets. Read on…

There are 8 secrets to it. Here is a lowdown:

Ink-printing layers: There are 4-6 Ink-printing (also called Silkscreen) layers in Honor 8 that enhance the ID color and laminating effects.

Optical coating: Multiple layers (4) of titanium silicon elements with optical coating (OPVD) have been used to increase optical grating to bring out ID colors and lighting effects. There is an additional layer for better colour perception. It ensures increased optical transmission. There is also a reflective coating which enhances lighting effect and 3D grating texture.

3D grating texture: This has a light production layer which fashion the concepts of chaning, docking and touching aurora. High-accuracy 3D grating texture forms a transparent 3D UV layer (similar to multiple prism lines) with great precision and a film thickness of 0.01 mm. The unique aurora design makes certain that light follows movements and shapes follow the light.

Have a look at the rear glass optical process structure (3D grating texture mold process):

PET film: This acts like an attached carrier for grating and other ID effects. Here, carrier has light transmission properties. The grating texture mold help s in carrying out texture printing and light curing. There is a 3D UV layer attached to it too.

Optically Clear Adhesive (OCA): This is a carrier that connects PET film to glass. It has light transmission properties.

Anti-reflection (AR) coating: It ensures images of greater quality through increased optical performance.

2.5D glass: This is a curved glass with rounded edges. This has a bright and transparent front glass with optimal combination of glass thickness and strength which makes the glass shock-proof yet light and slim.

Anti-fingerprint (AF) coating: This has hydrophilic and oleophobic surface properties which makes it easier for the device to get rid of fingerprint smudges.

Honor 8: Bokeh Made Easy

Built with urban photographers in mind, the Honor 8 is a smartphone designed on refinements brought about by its elder sibling – the Huawei P9. Now with the product officially launching in India, the wait for this flagship has finally ended.

Of the various camera modes available on the Honor 8, the one that really gets me excited is the wide aperture functionality present in the device. Having a dual-lens setup lets the Honor 8 simulate the shallow-depth-of-field of large sensor cameras, such as DSLRs and thus resulting in some seriously stunning ‘bokeh’ effect photographs.

In the Wide Aperture Mode, you can select an aperture value between F0.95 and F16 and a corresponding degree of blur is applied to the image. When adjusting your background blur, blur it only to the point where it doesn’t overlap the edges of the object in focus. This will result in the most realistic look.

To take the best image using this effect, make sure your phone is held as still as possible. Touch to focus on the object that you want to stand out and then take your photo.

Here are some sample shots taken on the Honor 8 using the wide aperture mode for your viewing pleasure:

Many photographers agree that the end results are definitely better than previous iterations of the effect, with a much smoother falloff in sharpness towards the background.

The mode can be fun to play with, especially when shooting portraits and is definitely one of the highlights of the Honor 8 camera.

What’s your take on this mode? Let me know in the comments below!

Honor 8: 2.5D Glass Explained

Honor’s fresh-from-the-oven flagship Honor 8 glorifies ‘glass’ like no one else does. Its dual glass design is the real crowd-puller along with other nifty features. What demands a mention here is the 2.5D technology that not just adds to the ergonomics but does a lot more than you can imagine.

So, what is 2.5D glass?

The display of Honor 8 looks slightly raised. That’s technically the 2.5D glass. To be more precise, it is a delicate front cover radian connecting two pieces of 2.5D glass that ensures comfort in hand. This is a curved glass with rounded edges. This has a bright and transparent front glass with optimal combination of glass thickness and strength which makes the glass shock-proof yet light and slim.

 What does 2.5D glass do?

The smooth symmetrical connection technique is used to connect the metal middle frame and the glass which then makes the phone super comfortable to hold. And it feels perfectly symmetrical in your hand too. That’s why it nestles into your palm giving you the feeling that it only belongs to you.

Optimal Radian

The optical radian provides an ergonomic design. The radian of the 2.5D glass and connection material is carefully calculated to ensure that the phone looks unified even when viewed from the sides.

Twin sheets of 2.5D optical-level glass

Different from common 2.5D glass processing methods, Honor 8’s dual sheets of 2.5D optical-level glass protects the camera with the rear glass and also strikes a balance with the surface.

Now, you know how essential is the 2.5D design to Honor 8’s glass architecture!

Honor 8: 9 Things Honor 8 Can Do, Which iPhone 7 Can’t

So, wedding bells are ringing. It is your D-day. Would you still go for a pricey Manish Malhotra gown breaking all your year’s savings or be wise enough to go for an equally stunning trousseau sans the label spending just half the former’s price?

To the wiser lot, the answer is crystal clear. But if you are still in two minds, here’s an eye-opener:

Phone freaks are asking ‘Why Honor 8?’ while there are many flagship killers around. And it’s high time, without beating around the bush, we told you why.

We will draw a parallel with none other than the Big Daddy, that is Apple iPhone 7.

To cut it short, here are 9 things that Honor 8 can do which an iPhone 7 can’t:

Playing music through 3.5 mm headphone jack

You don’t need to buy an extra pair of Bluetooth headphones. With headphones carrying a traditional 3.5mm pin it allows you to listen to your most-loved music tracks. With iPhone 7, you can’t charge your phone while listening to music 😦

Pro Mode for shooting videos

Honor 8’s dual-lens camera features Pro Mode which gives you full manual control of focus, W/B, ISO and shutter speed. You have been using Pro Mode for still images, now, get ready for Pro Videos too.

Expanding memory support

Our world is such a happening place that we need more storage to store and save all good things and memories. With Honor 8, you can expand the built-in 32GB memory by up to 128GB via microSD card. iPhone 7 doesn’t give you that.

Making a faster autofocus

Honor 8 leverages Laser Autofocus technology that will capture all your precious moments. The camera focuses faster and wastes no time in capturing an image. Apple iPhone 7 lacks a laser autofocus technology.

Enriching your multimedia viewing experience

Honor 8 outshines the iPhone 7 when it comes to display. It’s 5.2-inch IPS display delivers 1080×1920 pixels at an impressive 423 ppi, which defeats the 4.7-inch HD display on Apple iPhone offering 1,334 x 720 pixels at 326ppi.

Ensuring multitasking

Powered by 4GB RAM Honor 8 handles multiple applications at the same time and nothing takes the wind out of it.

Giving better images in low-light conditions

Apple iPhone 7 has a mono 12MP camera at the back with f/1.8 aperture. On the other hand, Honor 8 comes with two 12MP Sony sensors with f/2.2 apertures and 1.25 µm pixel sizes. One of them is a traditional RGB sensor that records color information, while the second is a monochrome sensor that measures brightness. After each shot, Honor 8’s software combines the two images into a single image, which gives a better result even in low-light conditions.

Clicking images through fingerprint sensor

Honor 8 has a smarter fingerprint Sensor unlike iPhone 7. It not just unlocks the handset, but also clicks images, displays notification panel, dismisses an alarm and accepts an incoming phone call.

Browsing gallery through fingerprint sensor

And you can browse gallery with it too:)

On the other hand, what is still a pain for me is the lack of a Back button on iPhone. It just gets on my nerves. And to note, iPhone 7 burns a big hole in your pocket, while Honor 8, priced at Rs 29,999, comes at just half of the former’s cost

Now, returning to the important question ‘Would you still go for a pricey Manish Malhotra gown breaking all your year’s savings or be wise enough to go for an equally stunning trousseau sans the label, spending half the former’s price? You got the drift, right!

HONOR 8: DESIGN – STATE OF THE ART

No doubt, first thing that makes you palm Honor’s latest flagship Honor 8 is its killer body! The dual glass panel—all glass front and back panel– design makes it a class apart. All we can say is Glass is Class!

What strikes is the material transition. From tried-and-trusted aluminum that sits boldly on chamfers to the exquisite glass panel that covers the body! How glass curves down graciously to marry with aluminum is the beauty of this device. Plus, the 3D grating effect through 15-layer light-refracting glass finish ensures it shines no less than the solitaire that flatters your ring finger!

Now, if we come to size. It has got a decent 5.2 inch display which certainly gives it an edge over the current generation smartphones which are so huge that neither fit your hand, nor your trouser pocket. You can peacefully hold and operate this with one hand while your other hand is busy stirring the morning cuppa. The genius engineers juxtaposed glass and aluminum so that just when you think it is going to slip from your hand, aluminum provides the much-needed grip. The curves on the device only help it nestle into your palm comfortably.

The 2.5D effect adds to the ergonomics. You can see how the display is slightly raised in Honor 8. That’s technically 2.5D glass. The ultra-narrow bezels— that are on both the sides– are a puller. The placements of buttons and ports are logical too. The power and volume rocker is on the right edge. The fine indented texture on the power button actually stands testimony to the fine engineering that has gone into making this premium device. SIM tray/micro SD card slot is on the left. USB Type-C input, headphone jack and speaker grille appear at the bottom. Chin looks clean without physical capacitive keys. The crown houses an IR blaster and mic. The front shooter and proximity sensor are placed at the forehead. The notification alert light is strategically placed on the right side of the speaker to save space and make it look less cluttered.

On the back, above the centre you will find fingerprint scanner. A circular recess. It is not covered by glass yet the built is so that it doesn’t look like the odd man out. It is easy to access too. The twin cameras at the top look like a cute owl’s rounded eyes. Absence of camera hump makes it sit flat on plain surface which further adds to the beauty of the piece. Laser sensor and flash are placed right next to the rear cameras.

By and large, there is not a single thing that you can crib about its design. It’s FLAWLESS!
